Colvin’s Covent Garden Debut June-July 2015!

Michael Colvin as Rodolphe and Eric Halfvarson as Melcthal in rehearsal for Guillaume Tell, The Royal Opera

Michael Colvin as Rodolphe and Eric Halfvarson as Melcthal in rehearsal for Guillaume Tell, The Royal Opera – June 2015

Michael Colvin will make his Covent Garden – Royal Opera House mainstage debut this June-July in the role of Rodolphe in Rossini’s GUILLAUME TELL, alongside fellow Canadian Gerald Finley in the title role!

Guillaume Tell is one of six operatic productions conducted by Anotonio Pappano this season at the ROH, as Covent Garden celebrates the work of the illustrious conductor.

From the Royal Opera House website:

Guillaume Tell had its premiere in 1829, when Gioachino Rossini was 37. He wouldn’t write another opera in the remaining 39 years of his life. Rossini’s letters suggest he knew Guillaume Tell would be his farewell to opera – an idea that seems to be confirmed by the magnificent music he was inspired to produce. The score – harmonically daring and fiercely difficult for the singers – has an opulent architectural grandeur, heightened with vivid evocations of the soaring Swiss landscape and an incisive dramatic interpretation of Schiller’s heroic play.

Northern Ireland Opera returns to the Grand Opera House with a new production of Richard Strauss’ notorious opera Salome. Based on the play by Oscar Wilde, the opera stars Belfast-born Giselle Allen as the Princess who dances for Herod in return for the most shocking of rewards – the head of John the Baptist. The potent combination of this famous biblical story, the eroticism of Salome’s famous Dance of the Seven Veils, and the bloodthirsty denouement initially caused the opera to be banned, but with its high drama and gloriously romantic score it is now a well-established part of the operatic repertoire.

Sung in English. Contains scenes that younger audiences may find disturbing.
